Atmospheric Deposition of Trace Metals in the San Francisco Bay Area
نویسندگان
چکیده
A pilot Study was conducted from August 1999 through August 2000 to estimate the loading of selected pollutants from the atmosphere to the San Francisco Estuary. Particulate in the ambient air and precipitation samples were collected at three locations. Dry deposition flux of copper, nickel, cadmium, and chromium was approximately 1100?73, 600?35, 22?15, and 1300?90 μg/m/year, respectively. The volume-weighted average concentrations of these trace metals in the precipitation were 1.2, 0.4, 0.1, and 0.2 μg/L, respectively. Direct atmospheric deposition, via both dry deposition and wet deposition, contributed approximately 1900, 930, 93, and 1600 kg/year of copper, nickel, cadmium, and chromium, respectively, to the Estuary. Indirect inputs via runoff from the local watersheds contributed approximately twice as much as the loading from direct atmospheric deposition. Direct atmospheric deposition contributes less than 10% of the total loading from stormwater runoff, and, therefore, represents a minor contributor to the total load.

The effects of the San Francisco Bay plume on trace metal and nutrient distributions in the Gulf of the Farallones
The distributions of particulate elements (Al, P, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb), dissolved trace metals (Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, and Cd), and dissolved nutrients (nitrate, phosphate, and silicic acid) were investigated in the Gulf of the Farallones, a region of high productivity that is driven by the dynamic mixing of the San Francisco Bay plume, upwelled waters, and California coastal surface wa...
متن کاملReconstructing Contaminant Deposition in a San Francisco Bay Marina, California.
Two sediment cores were collected from a marina in the San Francisco Bay to characterize historical sediment contamination resulting from the direct discharge of industrial wastewater from Naval Air Station Alameda. Depth profiles of trace metals, petroleum hydrocarbons, and radionuclides were determined with a 12-cm spacing down to a depth of 120 cm. The chronology of sediment accumulation is ...
متن کاملTidal salt marsh sediment in California, USA. Part 2: occurrence and anthropogenic input of trace metals.
Surface sediment samples (0-5 cm) from 5 tidal salt marshes along the coast in California, USA were analyzed to investigate the occurrence and anthropogenic input of trace metals. Among study areas, Stege Marsh located in the central San Francisco Bay was the most contaminated marsh. Concentrations of metals in Stege Marsh sediments were higher than San Francisco Bay ambient levels. Zinc (55.3-...
متن کاملA review of factors influencing measurements of decadal variations in metal contamination in San Francisco Bay, California.
This review summarizes some of the principal results of systematic measurements of trace metal concentrations throughout San Francisco Bay that began in 1989, and that have yielded insights on the factors controlling temporal and spatial variations of those concentrations on seasonal to decadal time scales. Pronounced seasonal variation in some metal concentrations is associated with gradients ...
متن کاملThe slow recovery of San Francisco Bay from the legacy of organochlorine pesticides.
The use of organochlorine pesticides, including DDTs, chlordanes, and dieldrin, peaked in San Francisco Bay's watershed 30-40 years ago, yet residues of the pesticides remain high. Known as legacy pesticides for their persistence in the Bay decades after their uses ended, the compounds and their breakdown products occur at concentrations high enough to contribute to advisories against the consu...
